Celebrating the Thomas franchise, the pilot episode has not been shown since 1983.
A recently rediscovered version of the pilot episode of Thomas & Friends – not seen since 1983 – is now available to view online. Titled Down the Mine, Sir Ringo Starr narrates the original test episode. It appeared online on Friday May 9th to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise.
The original pilot episode – now over 40 years old – was shot on 35mm film but was digitally updated. Ian McCue – series producer on the show from 2010 to 2020 – said the team “stumbled across” some old film cans… He added that the cans had been put in storage and that the team had to piece together the footage “with great love and care.”
McCue added: “I think there’s a sort of a lovely charm and innocence about it, and I think – even as a pilot; a test piece – it still has that lovely, classic, timeless story to it, and the voices… Everything is just so delightful.”
Mattel’s Roberto Stanichi, who now own the rights to Thomas the Tank Engine, said Thomas had “brought joy to generations, sharing timeless stories and valuable life lessons.” He added: “As we celebrate this momentous year, we’re unveiling 40-year-old footage and newly uncovered stories from the vault for the first time ever, offering longtime fans and new audiences the chance to reconnect with the beloved adventures of Thomas & Friends in new and nostalgic ways.”
