‘Neuroaesthetic design’: Tapi Carpets & Floor’s Jo Constantinou looks at how interior design is evolving

Johanna Constantinou, interior trends expert at Tapi Carpets & Floors, looks at how the interior design landscape is shifting towards one that is becoming more wellbeing and sustainability conscious.

Neuroaesthetic design is an emerging area of interior design which concentrates on how interior spaces affect mood, cognition and wellbeing. Flooring that supports this – through soft textures, calming colours or natural patterns – could become a key part of home design focused on mental health.

The rise of wellness and health-focused lifestyles means people are more conscious about the feeling a space creates. Hybrid working has also impacted design by making multifunctionality essential. People want flooring that transitions easily from work to relaxation, so we’re seeing increased demand for durable yet cosy options, especially in living rooms and home offices – softness, warmth and biophilic textures are all priorities.

Sustainability and eco-conscious interiors are growing in importance for many, particularly in a world domineered by ever-changing social media fads, people are now opting for stability. Not only is this driven by ethical reasons, but for the grounding and calming effect these interiors evoke emotionally.

“Herringbone carpets and natural-look materials are in high demand”

Herringbone carpets and natural-look materials are in high demand, such as sisal, jute, and wool-mixes, and textures like loop pile are gaining traction as people look to add character and depth to their interiors.

Trends in colours follow suit, with earthy neutrals leading the way, such as taupe, beige and we’re also seeing a wide use of sage green, terracotta, ochre, and deep navy being used to inject personality without overwhelming a space. These tones are grounding, offering a sense of calm.

One innovation we’re particularly proud of at Tapi Carpets & Floors is our underlay made with at least 20% Nike Grind foam from manufacturing scrap. It’s the perfect foundation for a new carpet, offering a springy feel underfoot and extra insulation. Using clever technology, it stops fungi and bacteria from growing, extending the life of a floor and keeping carpets looking fantastic for as long as possible. Nike Grind is turning what was once considered waste into new interior opportunities.

The future of interiors will be focused on how spaces make us feel, which in turn is likely to encourage more consumption conscious and longevity focused choices for many.
