Bottles, backpacks, barrels and boats… Deej Johnson celebrates licensed ‘Jaws at 50’ products.
Four minutes. That’s about how long we actually see the shark on screen in Steven Spielberg’s cinematic masterpiece Jaws. Set over roughly 12 days during July 1974, the original summer blockbuster actually reached screens and caused screams in 1975… And has just turned 50! To celebrate, Brands Untapped takes a look at some of the products released to mark the occasion.
LEGO Ideas #21350
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat…”
Jaws fan Jonny Campbell is the proponent of this terrific LEGO Ideas set. Executed in minifig scale, it’s a 1,497-piece set that scarcely puts a foot wrong – or a fin. Complete with Orca boat, Chief Martin Brody, Dr. Matt Hooper, Sam Quint… And the shark, naturally!
Fior di Sole Wine Collection
“Here’s to swimmin’ with bow-legged women.”
It’s not entirely clear what Quint pours from the skanky booze bottle he has in his harbourside shack… Or exactly where that bellywash has come from! We do know, though, where Fior di Sole’s Jaws wine collection comes from: Napa Valley. This limited-edition collection includes a Tropical Blue Wine Spritzer, an Amity Island Red and an Amity Island White… Which makes absolute sense because everyone in the film was looking for a great white.
Loungefly Jaws 50th Anniversary Mini Backpack
“I need to have something in the foreground to give it some scale.”
This cute piece of luggage is 22.8cm across, 25.4cm tall and 11.4cm from front to back. It scores high marks for subtlety since it appears to be hugely cheerful! The design depicts an ocean scene at sunset… A boat in the distance… And the great white worrier mostly hidden for fans to find in their own time.
McFarlane Toys Jaws Figure
“Get out of the water!”
Allison Maher may not be a name you ever heard. There’s no doubt you’ve seen her, though… Allison Maher is the name of the model that posed as the swimmer for the Jaws poster! Here, Allison also appears in figure form for a striking model from MacFarlane Toys. As always, she’s completely oblivious to what lurks beneath! Beautifully crafted, it’s a bit of a treat to see this iconic image in 3D.
The Daily Jaws 50th Anniversary Yellow Barrel Floaty Keychain
“Mr. Cooper! Attach the end of this line to the first keg…”
Promising to be as practical as it is collectible, this barrel-shaped keychain really does float! Inspired by the yellow kegs that helped the hunters hunt the hunter, this’ll keep your keys safe… If you think it’s safe to go back in the water.
Mondo Jaws – Original Motion Picture Score – 50th Anniversary Edition 2xLP
“…not a bad record for this vicinity.”
What’s not to love about this? Fans love the packaging alone, but it’s an absolute treat for anyone who goes gaga for the dah-dah… Rightly described as “one of the finest achievements in film music”, John Williams’s Jaws score is presented here restored and remastered. The double LP set features liner notes by 50th Anniversary Reissue Producer Mike Matessino. Available in classic black or blood-and-water red.
RSVLTS Jaws ‘Night Swim’ Kunuflex Short-Sleeve Shirt
“He’s gonna have a heart attack when he sees what I brought him!”
This rather striking shirt design eschews more obvious Jaws imagery to show the shark’s first victim, Chrissie Watkins. She never knew what bit her! Here we see the character depicted in eye-catching red… And from the shark’s perspective – just as she was seen in the scene on screen.
