What’s the key to successful collaborations between creative and commercial teams within brand owners? This new series seeks to find out. We pick the brains of Hasbro’s Marianne James and Katie Frame.

The post Dream Teams: Hasbro’s Marianne James and Katie Frame appeared first on Brands Untapped.

What’s the key to a cohesive collaborative relationship between your commercial and creative teams?
Katie: For me, it’s all about communication in an open, honest way. If the creative team’s working in a bubble, we’re not going to deliver the right product at the right time. It’s important we have constant communication with the commercial team, understand their retail plans and how we fulfil them from a creative perspective. There’s no point having the most brilliant creative concept if it doesn’t actually sell!

Marianne: Exactly. I’ll add that it’s not just about sharing information, it’s about creating a shared vision. The commercial team needs to understand the creative process, but the creative team also needs to grasp the commercial realities.

Do you find creatives have insights that impact commercial strategy, as much as commercial folk have ideas about effective creative?
Marianne: Absolutely. Creativity doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Often, the creative team is at the forefront of identifying new trends, cultural shifts and emerging consumer preferences. Their deep understanding of how consumers interact with brands and products often informs our commercial strategy.

Katie: When commercial teams bring their expertise on pricing, distribution and retail dynamics, it lets us refine and scale creative ideas to maximise their impact. It’s not just about designing products that look good! We have to think about how consumers are going to connect with them.

We regularly contribute to commercial conversations, whether it’s through driving innovation as part of the product discussions or introducing new category opportunities because of a trend that’s just starting to bubble up.

“There’s no point having the most brilliant creative concept if it doesn’t actually sell!“

Is there a recent launch you’d point to as a good example of the benefits of commercial and creative teams working in lockstep?
Marianne: A really great example for me was our My Little Pony pop-up stores with MINISO in 2024. We were able to take the timeless appeal of the franchise and infuse it with fresh, modern elements that would resonate with new generations. Early on, we sat down together to talk about everything – from product ranges to retail strategy. It meant we could optimise everything to ensure the product not only looked fantastic but also hit all the right notes in terms of retail distribution and consumer appeal. The results were fantastic.

Katie: That’s a perfect example! The commercial and creative teams sat together to analyse targeted consumers, find the connection with My Little Pony brand DNA and create a beautiful bespoke product line dedicated to the local market.

Marianne – lovely to check in! So, MONOPOLY at 90! Before we dive into some partnerships, what makes this brand an exciting one to work on licensing-wise?
Hi Billy! It’s always great to chat with you! Celebrating MONOPOLY’s 90th anniversary is such a huge moment for the brand, and it’s incredible to reflect on its journey. MONOPOLY is more than just a game – it’s a global phenomenon that has been part of people’s lives for generations. That storied legacy makes working on its licensing such an exciting opportunity. We’re not just collaborating on products; we’re helping to shape the way people experience MONOPOLY in fresh, innovative ways. Whether it’s through new pop culture editions, digital experiences or even fashion collaborations, the challenge and excitement come from staying true to the brand’s timeless fun while also pushing boundaries and connecting with fans in new ways.

The game is so ubiquitous – I imagine when people think ‘board game’, they think MONOPOLY. What kind of opportunities does this sort of mass awareness present to you and the team?
MONOPOLY is one of those rare brands that nearly everyone knows, and that massive awareness opens doors to some amazing opportunities. The fact that so many people already know and love the game means we can think beyond the traditional board game space and get creative with a variety of industries – fashion, sports, entertainment, you name it. The possibilities are endless!

“The beauty of MONOPOLY is that it’s incredibly adaptable – it can be reimagined through various partnerships without losing its essence.”

When the brand is so well-known, and has so many recognisable elements, how would you describe the challenge of surprising consumers with MONOPOLY?
It’s definitely a balancing act! MONOPOLY is a 90-year-old brand, so its core elements are classic and timeless, but we’re always looking for ways to reinvent the experience and keep it exciting. The beauty of MONOPOLY is that it’s incredibly adaptable – it can be reimagined through various partnerships without losing its essence. A great example is MONOPOLY SCRABBLE, a brilliant crossover we created alongside Winning Moves that combines the strategy of MONOPOLY with the wordplay of SCRABBLE. Fans love this clever twist on the classics.

We also have over 300 unique tabletop editions, including pop-culture titles like Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy and RuPaul’s Drag Race and The Beatles – proving there really is a MONOPOLY for everyone. Collaborations that offer something new while staying true to the brand’s themes of friendly competition, strategy and a little bit of villainy are always exciting to explore.

Historically, are there any partnerships that come to mind that have been important milestones in the brand’s licensing journey?
With 90 years of history, it’s hard to choose just a few, but there are definitely some standout moments in recent years. One of the biggest has been the launch of the MONOPOLY GO! app with our partners at Scopely. Released in 2023, MONOPOLY GO! has been an absolute game-changer, offering a fast-paced, mobile-first version of MONOPOLY with daily rewards and quick gameplay. It’s a huge hit with over 11 million daily active users, which shows just how MONOPOLY can evolve with new generations of players.

Another big moment was the opening of the first MONOPOLY LIFESIZED experience in London with Path Entertaiment Group. This immersive experience lets fans step into a giant, interactive MONOPOLY game, and it’s been a huge success. Since then, we’ve expanded with a permanent location in Riyadh and a touring experience across the U.S. These immersive experiences offer fans a whole new way to engage with the brand.

And, of course, we’re thrilled about our deal with Lionsgate and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap for a MONOPOLY movie. This is a huge step forward for the brand, bringing the iconic game to the big screen. It’s another opportunity to expand MONOPOLY’s presence in pop culture and introduce it to new audiences. All of these milestones show just how much MONOPOLY continues to evolve, while staying connected to its roots.

“We’re thrilled about our deal with Lionsgate and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap for a MONOPOLY movie.”

Yes! The movie sounds exciting. Is that indicative of the kinds of fresh partnerships you’re looking to strike for MONOPOLY?
We’re always working on exciting new collaborations, and there’s a lot coming up that I can’t wait to share! As we continue to explore fresh partnerships, we’re particularly focused on experiences that expand MONOPOLY beyond the board – whether through digital innovation, immersive experiences, or partnerships in unexpected industries. The anniversary year has really opened up opportunities to push the brand’s boundaries and bring MONOPOLY to new heights.

There’s plenty of strings you can pull at with MONOPOLY – the board design, the tokens, Mr. Monopoly. Do you get the feeling it’s a brand that designers at licensees like to create for?
Absolutely! A brand like MONOPOLY is a designer’s dream. From the board design to the tokens, designers have a lot of creative freedom to reimagine elements in ways that feel fresh, but still keep the heart of the game intact. We’ve seen some incredible designs over the years — from unique token styles to new ways of packaging the game. It’s also a brand that people feel connected to emotionally, so working on a MONOPOLY edition can be both a fun challenge and an opportunity to do something really special.

“We’re exploring new and unexpected collaborations that challenge traditional perceptions of the game.”

Does this anniversary year give you license to do deals that ‘push the brand’s boundaries’ in any way?
Definitely! The 90th anniversary feels like a natural moment to celebrate where MONOPOLY has been but also usher it into a new era. We’re exploring new and unexpected collaborations that challenge traditional perceptions of the game. For example, we’ve been looking at digital and experiential opportunities that go beyond the board game itself – creating new ways for fans to engage with MONOPOLY in the digital space. It’s about finding ways to surprise people and keep the brand feeling as fresh as ever.

Marianne, I have one last question! What’s your go-to token when playing MONOPOLY?
I’m a classic player, so I always gravitate toward the thimble. It has a certain charm and nostalgia for me, and I love how it represents the history of the game. Plus, it’s always been a bit of an underdog in the token world, and I love that!

Ha, it does feel like the underdog token doesn’t it! Good to see some love for it here! Thanks again Marianne.

Marianne, it’s great to catch up! First up, your role has expanded since we last chatted! Where do you look after licensing-wise now?
Excited to catch up with you again, Billy! Yes, my new title is Senior Vice President, Global Licensing at Hasbro, so I now oversee our licensed merchandise business across all regions. In addition, I now oversee our Global Publishing division, so I support the team in bringing beloved brands like Transformers, Peppa Pig and Dungeons & Dragons to life for fans of all ages through books, comics, audio storytelling and more.

This year is a big one for Hasbro, with D&D’s 50th anniversary, Peppa’s 20th and Transformers turning 40. Can you talk us through some stand-out launches from these so far?
That’s right! 2024 is a momentous year. D&D is celebrating five decades of fantasy role-playing with new games, entertainment and products. A stand-out launch we’ve had so far this year is our new LEGO IDEAS Red Dragon’s Tale set, a fan-designed brick representation of the iconic tabletop game. The 3,745-piece set is incredibly detailed, and we also collaborated with LEGO on a special D&D adventure book, available for free on D&D Beyond.

For the Transformers franchise, we’re honouring the brand’s origins by rallying around the theme of “40 Years. One Legacy.” One launch we’re particularly excited about is an expansion of our line of state-of-the-art Transformers robots with Robosen Robotics. Joining the Flagship Optimus Prime, Flagship Grimlock and others is the Flagship Megatron.

With 118 microchips and powered by 36 servo motors, the Flagship Megatron stands at an impressive 21” tall and converts from robot to tank mode via voice command or app. Designed with authentic G1 artistry, Megatron comes with an Energon Sword & Mace and missiles to fire, and even includes new character lines voiced by the original Megatron – Frank Welker.

Finally, we jumped into Peppa Pig’s anniversary year with an exciting release: LEGO DUPLO Peppa Pig sets. Designed for little ones aged two years and older, the sets offer great play experiences based on iconic scenes and characters from the beloved pre-school show that inspire role-play and creativity.

To add to the fun, we teamed up with branded entertainment destination leader Merlin Entertainments to create unique play experiences with LEGO DUPLO Peppa Pig play areas coming to select Merlin Entertainments attractions and theme parks.

Why do you feel D&D, Peppa Pig and Transformers have been able to survive and thrive for so long?
Dungeons & Dragons has enchanted fans for 50 years thanks to its innovative gameplay, immersive world, compelling characters and powerful storytelling. We’ve also seen a boom for the franchise in pop culture as consumers have increasingly embraced the fantasy genre and roleplaying possibilities of D&D.

With regard to Peppa, the brand has been by the side of pre-schoolers as they experience many of life’s firsts – from learning how to read to bravely jumping into their first day of school and more. Peppa instils a powerful confidence in children that helps them to treat every first step as a new adventure, from the everyday to the epic. This theme is so powerful for pre-schoolers.

As for Transformers, I think the brand’s enduring connection has been made possible by its rich storytelling and characters: the heroic Autobots who seek to protect all life, and the evil Decepticons who seek to conquer the universe.

You mentioned LEGO launches for D&D and Peppa. What makes LEGO an exciting partner for these brands?
LEGO’s mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow through the power of play. At Hasbro, we too believe in the power of play, and for fans of all ages. With LEGO, we’ve been able to truly showcase the ‘all ages’ piece by offering our LEGO DUPLO Peppa Pig sets for ages two plus and our LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons set for ages 18 and above. This range perfectly represents how we’re delivering play experiences to multi-generational fans and how we want everyone to be able to enjoy and celebrate our brands!

Another exciting line you’re showcasing at Vegas is the My Little Pony cosmetics collection from Beauty Creations. Why did this feel like a neat fit for the brand?
We’re super excited to work with Beauty Creations on this fun and colourful My Little Pony collection. This unique collaboration combines the long-lasting, cruelty-free products for which Beauty Creations is known, with the nostalgic, retro colour palette and artwork signature of My Little Pony. It really captures the essence of the beloved brand.

The poneyverse is for everyone, including tweens, teens and moms who grew up with the Mane 6, so offering a beauty collection themed to My Little Pony collection is such a natural fit. This line is perfect for the older audience to help show off their fandom!

Before we wrap up, I wanted to loop back to anniversaries. Do you feel they give you greater freedom to try new things with your brands?
Anniversaries certainly allow us to expand our offerings by tapping into all-new formats, while also focusing on the nostalgia of our IP to help us celebrate the origins of our prized brands and characters. Through an anniversary, we aim to celebrate the brand’s entire existence so that we’re bringing fans of all ages into the celebrations. Anniversaries are for everyone!

For instance, this year’s 40th anniversary of Transformers allowed us to tap into the franchise’s rich archives to create a special anniversary vinyl album featuring music from the 1984 original animated TV show, The Transformers.

With Peppa Pig, fans can now dance along to Peppa’s first-ever cover song ‘Roar’, following the debut of the three-part Peppa Pig Wedding Party Special featuring superstar voices Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.

As for D&D, we’ve recently celebrated the grand opening of Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern, a live stage show in NYC which takes adventurers on an epic adventure to celebrate D&D’s 50th. We also translated the iconic role-play franchise into stunning fashions and footwear with Converse. Other fun anniversary offerings include fantastical fashions from BlackMilk, along with gaming accessories and collectibles from WizKids, Sirius Dice, Beadle & Grimm’s and others.

Overall, brand anniversaries serve as gigantic celebrations where we can honour our beloved IP across wide-ranging formats all-year long. Each brand moment – including products, experiences and entertainment – layers onto our powerhouse brand portfolios, which lead to greater brand awareness across the board.

Always a pleasure. Thanks Marianne!

Marianne, it’s always great to catch up. Hasbro recently debuted a striking collection of Furby apparel with Cakeworthy. What makes that brand an exciting one to explore through licensing?
Well, since Furby first hit shelves 25 years ago, the cute, cool – and weird! – toy remains a unique symbol of self-expression for fans across the globe. With a passionate and growing fandom, Furby has turned into more than just a toy – Furby is an icon!

Furby also offers a nostalgic journey back to their childhood, reimagining 25 years of history, while bringing forth a sense of fun, creativity and relatability for audiences of all ages. The brand reminds fans that they can be their hilarious, wacky, perfectly imperfect selves, because that is what makes them – and the world – a little more special.

Brilliant answer! The Cakeworthy collection made a splash – why do you think Furby is proving a great fit for fashion?
The brand is poised to become a true force in fashion, capitalising on the current nostalgia trend at its peak. We’re immersed in the revival of our fondest ’90s memories, reimagining iconic characters, embracing vivid colours and transcending traditional silhouettes beyond basic tees.

“Collaborating with Furby allows our partners to push creative boundaries.”

Collaborating with the Furby brand allows our partners to explore new possibilities and push creative boundaries, giving birth to fresh collections that reimagine the original toy in a contemporary light. There are few better ways to show off your Furby fandom than by wearing Furby on your sleeves – literally!

Ha! Or on your head – the Furby bucket hats certainly catch the eye! On that, what made Cakeworthy stand out as a perfect partner for the brand?
As an expert fashion brand in the fandom space, Cakeworthy fits in seamlessly as a partner for Furby. Their team’s affinity to the brand empowered them to bring their vision for the perfect collection to life. They not only introduced an exhilarating and pioneering assortment to their core fan base, but also captivated fans of all demographics.

“Furby has turned into more than just a toy – Furby is an icon!”

This widespread appeal is fuelled by the nostalgia and rich history associated with the Furby brand and its resurgence. With outrageously fun designs inspired by earlier versions of the iconic toy, this collection has something for every generation of Furby fan.

Cakeworthy Founder Brandon Shedden said this is one of the firm’s most ambitious collections to date. There’s 3D elements and hair, which are new elements for the company. How important was it to push this range design-wise?
Both Furby and Cakeworthy have always celebrated all things playful and weird, so bringing those unexpected details into the assortment felt like an obvious win. Highlighting the textural elements of the nostalgic toy as a distinctive embellishment to apparel and accessories brings the collection to life – for both the bold fashion connoisseur as well as the nostalgic fan.

Marianne, this has been fun! Before we wrap up, looking ahead, what other areas of interest do you have for Furby?
The world is our oyster when it comes to the future of Furby. We look forward to attracting all types of premier partnerships across licensed consumer product categories to create a similar impact on the new generation of Furby fans as it did for 90s and Y2K kids.

Hasbro has big plans to grow its branded offerings for Furby in new and exciting formats, ultimately giving consumers more ways to showcase their fandom. Furby is not just a passing trend; it’s here to stay!

Marianne James – Vice President, Europe & Asia, Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro – talks us through recent footwear collaborations with Skechers and Irregular Choice.

The post Hasbro’s Marianne James on expressing fandom through footwear with TRANSFORMERS appeared first on Brands Untapped.

Marianne, thanks for making time for this footwear-focused chat. Why is this category an exciting space to bring your brands into?
In recent years, we’ve seen huge demand from consumers of all ages for fashions that allow them to show off their favourite brands and characters. Footwear, in particular, is a very fun and distinctive way to reflect personal style and individuality – and it completes and complements our overall fashion offerings.

To meet consumer and market needs, we’ve increased our apparel, footwear and accessories offerings exponentially by engaging in strategic collaborations with world-class brands like Skechers and Irregular Choice. We know that footwear is a significant and growing category, so in fulfilling our consumer desires we are also able to make a statement, gain reach and build hype in the market.

What made Skechers and Irregular Choice exciting partners for the TRANSFORMERS brand?
For decades, TRANSFORMERS has maintained its position in the cultural zeitgeist by captivating fans across the globe with its signature action and adventure. Ahead of the brand’s 40th anniversary next year, we’ve sought to collaborate with top brands across the world to give everyone a stylish way to show off their fandom.

We pride ourselves on storytelling and innovation – we would be hard pressed to find a better partner than Irregular Choice to really capture that within the footwear space in the UK market. The creative and craftmanship that goes into the designing of their footwear is really a piece of art, and that matches the spectacle that the TRANSFORMERS franchise is known for.

Additionally, Skechers is a globally recognised brand and has seen great popularity in Asia – where this collaboration is focused – amongst young adults and children. They have successfully launched other bespoke and co-branded lines in recent years, positioning them as a trendsetter and cool brand amongst various consumer targets.

They also expanded the collaboration outside of the regular footwear by adding fun accessories such as socks and tees, as well as bags and caps. To top it off, Skechers went over and beyond in terms of marketing support, creating a full stop motion reel featuring the Hasbro toys also available in the market.

Could you talk us through some of your favourite design details in these collections?
While the entire TRANSFORMERS collection with Irregular Choice is whimsical and unexpected, the Roll Out boot is a strong favourite. The design is bold and features a heeled shoe, offering variety with what has been done in the past on TRANSFORMERS footwear. It also has key branded features like the TRANSFORMERS Autobot shield and an Optimus Prime removable patch.
